Make an Appointment

In advance of booking any appointments Dr Turner kindly asks that you read the information below.

What to Expect

Appointments last for 50 minutes and are available to clients aged 18 upwards. During your initial consultation Dr Turner’s aim is to get to know your main reasons for seeking support with empathy and compassion. He will ask you to complete some brief surveys and will consider how best to apply the therapy approaches he is trained in to your situation.

If you decide to move forward with therapy appointments, the approach Dr Turner provides integrates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) including skills in mindfulness-based interventions, self-compassion, and habit reversal, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement De-sensitisation and Re-processing (EMDR) based on your needs and his extensive experience of working with clients who attend the dermatology setting.

A usual course of therapy is 6 – 12 appointments although this varies from client to client. Some clients have up to 20 appointments.

Confidentiality

All appointments provided at The Skin Psychologist Ltd are private and confidential. The only limits to confidentiality are very rare situations in which a client shares information suggesting that they or someone else is at significant risk of harm. In those situations, Dr Turner has a professional duty to inform more appropriate professionals or services.

These are the standard limits of confidentiality that all practitioner psychologists must follow to keep people safe. You can read the full privacy policy for The Skin Psychologist Ltd by clicking on the icon at the base of the website.

Letter Writing

Dr Turner can write initial consultation and end of therapy reports to you and copy in your referrer if you view this as helpful. However, he will only do this or speak to another professional (e.g., your GP or dermatologist) looking after you if you give him permission to do so.

Psychology Appointments

Dr Turner’s approach to psychology appointments is safe, supportive, and effective. It is research evidence-based and integrates: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) including skills in mindfulness-based interventions, self-compassion, and habit reversal, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Re-Processing (EMDR). He helps his clients meet personally meaningful goals and live healthier and more meaningful lives.
He offers appointments to people with autoimmune and inflammatory hair and skin conditions and many other reasons for attending dermatology departments.

Psychodermatology

Psychodermatology is a sub specialty of dermatology including multidisciplinary professionals with a special interest in the links between the skin and mind. Skin conditions can have a negative impact on mental health and poor mental health can exacerbate many conditions seen in dermatology. Stress, beliefs, worries, anxieties, and depression can prevent some people’s hair and skin conditions from improving for various reasons and can add to limitations put on their everyday life. For many it is important that treatment includes stress reduction, improved adjustment and increasing self-compassion. Attending psychological therapy alongside having contact with your dermatologist is therefore often very helpful.

Presentations and Workshops

Dr Turner uses his extensive experience as a clinical psychologist in the dermatology setting to give educational presentations and interactive workshops to a range of audiences.

Supervision

Dr Turner promotes safe and accountable clinical practice by providing supervision to other practitioner psychologists. This service may be of interest to psychologists seeking support from a psychologist accredited with the BABCP for cognitive behavioural practice with a lot of experience working with patients with long-term conditions. Dr Turner has been running peer supervision in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for colleagues at Guy’s and St Thomas’ for many years. He also attends supervision as a professional requirement.
